Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, Claire Devlin is now a Montreal-based saxophonist and composer. She has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Jazz Performance from McGill University. Claire is a member of several ensembles, including the Canadian National Jazz Orchestra, the Sarah Rossy Chamber Ensemble, the Plastic Waste Band, Acorn Hat, and Jean-Michel Leblanc’s Variétés Narratives, and she performs regularly with the Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal, Rommel Ribeiro, Thus Owls, and the Equal Jazz Orchestra.
Formed in 2016, the Claire Devlin Quartet unites four unique musical voices from the Montreal jazz scene. Lyrical melodies are paired with driving rhythms, and the traditional roles of each instrument are often left behind. The quartet’s repertoire of original music strikes a balance of intricate through-composition and completely open-ended improvisation. In July 2020, the Claire Devlin Quartet released their debut album, “Anyone”, on Florafone Records. The group features Roman Munoz (guitar), Mathieu McConnell-Enright (bass), and John Buck (drums).
