Ottawa Jazz Festival: John Hollenbeck’s McCQ featuring Anna Webber and Matt Mitchell

John Hollenbeck’s McCQ featuring Anna Webber and Matt Mitchell is a sextet comprising of today’s most promising young contemporary jazz musicians. Playing the repertoire of the acclaimed Claudia Quintet, McCQ began as a group of graduate students at McGill University under the tutelage of John Hollenbeck. They have played multiple shows around Montreal, including a concert with Jen Shyu in October 2018, and toured to Toronto and Ottawa in December 2018. This special concert will include the other two thirds of Anna Webber’s Simple Trio (who are also playing earlier on Friday June 21 at 6:00pm on the NAC Fourth Stage). This unique and expanded version of McCQ should not be missed!

John Paton's Painting by Numbers

Vancouver-based Saxophonist and Composer John Paton leads a group of Montreal players to premiere a new set of original works. Featuring

John Hollenbeck's McClaudia Quintet

Sarah Rossy - Vocals
Claire Devlin - Tenor Sax, Clarinet
David Rhysphan - Piano, Keyboards
Cole Birney-Stewart - Bass
John Hollenbeck - Drums/Composition

John Hollenbeck's McClaudia Quintet sound continues to explore the edge without alienating the mainstream, proving that genre-defying music can be for everyone.Unlike most jazz ensembles where the particular musicians may come and go, drummer, composer and leader John Hollenbeck always wanted McClaudia to be a ‘band’ with a sound not only determined by the compositions and the instrumentation, but with the actual players who perform the music.

“The Plastic Waste Band is a project inspired by humanity’s relationship with our own environment and our insistence on destroying that which sustains us.
